Products from DOGBAR
Sustainable design. Created and produced in Germany.
The dogBar® was designed by Jiri M.R. Katter, who wanted to create a dog food bowl that would adapt to everyday life not just through its function, but also its design. The wooden form for the "mini counter" is reminiscent of the famous Eames Lounge Chair and has impressed dog lovers from the Ruhr area to Hollywood. Jiri M.R. Katter designs furniture that seems useful to him, and so his first designer piece was a DJ desk, followed by other pieces such as sideboards, spectacle stands and even a notebook table. His most frequently used material is shaped wood, which he also uses for the dogBar®.
The licence for the dogBar® design has been held by interior design consultant Anne Rademacher, who sold the dogBar® quite early on in her dog boutique "Feine Dame" in Münster.
When the chance came to take over the licence in 2018, Anne didn't think twice and closed her boutique after 12 years of business. Since then, she has been taking care of the production and distribution of the designer pieces. While nothing has changed in the design, Anne has brought the topic of sustainability into play. Production was moved to Germany and the wood used was carefully selected with the environment in mind.
For the porcelain bowls, Anne chose Porzellanmanufaktur Reichenbach, which, with less than 40 employees, is one of the few porcelain manufacturers that still sources even the raw materials from Germany.
When I asked Anne why the sustainability of the products is so important to her, she was almost take a little aback by the question before answering that it was simply natural for her to take responsibility for our environment. It is important to her that her products are manufactured as sustainably as possible and she also thinks about her private consumption. Questioning the origin of meat comes just as naturally. When Anne talks about it, it all sounds so normal that I can imagine for a moment that we live in a world where no one produces unnecessary waste or does anything as ethically immoral as buying meat from factory farms. How nice that would be...
Sustainability starts in the bowl.
The dogBar® is a beautiful symbol of this and its design can be as present as the topic of sustainability, which will be in our living spaces at some point. Hopefully!
The dogBar® products were awarded the German Manufacture Prize 2019.
